Chenango Shredders is a youth mountain bike (MTB) race team that is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) youth development program; we participate in the New York Interscholastic Cycling League Spring race series.
We are a “composite” team, which means we are not tied to a specific school or organization so any student athlete in the area can join.
Training and racing with a team provides life lessons in self-discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship, along with the fitness and camaraderie.
Mountain bike racing is an endurance sport centered around personal accomplishment more than the competition. Our program seeks to strike a balance between being a competitive individual and team sport while retaining some gentler recreation club qualities.
Our program is based on the Challenge By Choice premise; student-athletes set the goals and we help them achieve those goals, whatever they are.
All riders on the team have the opportunity to race – there are no bench warmers. For athletes new to cycling, immediate immersion into training, racing, and the pressure to perform may be intimidating. This is the reason the League has carefully designed individual racing classes (categories/divisions). NICA-NY has fourteen race categories based on grade and gender allowing kids to compete against their peers. This allows beginners, intermediate and advanced riders to ride with peers of similar ability and experience.

There are lots of girls racing in the League. In fact, girl participation is the fastest growing demographic.
We are doing our part to support that trend through empowering girls and providing them with a vehicle to gain a new kind of confidence and appreciation for what they can accomplish.
The National Interscholastic Cycling Association, New York Interscholastic Cycling League and our own Chenango Shredders team are committed to creating an environment and opportunities that encourage more girls to try and experience this fun sport.
We even offer Girls Only Ride opportunities, where girls get introduced to and connected with the sport in perhaps somewhat more comfortable setting, supported and cheered by female peers and coaches. Check our Girls On Mountain Bikes program and NICA GRiT initiative.

NICA is built on youth development principles that are the foundation of a movement that’s fun, exciting, relevant and enriching to middle and high school student-athletes. Specifically, NICA’s five core principles are fully integrated into the programs, resources and staff support for leagues, coaches and student athletes.
